Gatka - the Sikh martial art. It originated the later part of 19th century and is divided into two categories:
- rasmi (ritualistic)
- khel (sport)
The word has evolved from the Sanskrit word Gada (meaning Mace) and refers to the wooden stick which is an integral part of this. It is also supposed to be a reconstruction, in many ways, of the fighting styles/techniques resorted to by the Sikhs during the 16th-18th centuries.
It’s a combination of grace, stealth, focus and being quick on feet. An absolute joy to watch!
